How to make cold brew

Cold brew coffee is quickly becoming a global favorite any time of day and any season of the year. Here’s how to create your own at home with a coffee press or even a mason jar.

What you’ll need

  • Ice
  • Coffee press or glass jar with metal sieve or paper filter
  • Tablespoon
  • Cool or room‑temperature water
  • Cup
  • Spoon
  • 100 grams whole bean coffee, coarse ground

Water-coffee ratio

  • 20 grams (4 tablespoons coarse) ground coffee per 180 grams (6 fluid ounces) water for concentrate

Directions

  1. Measure coffee: Add coarse ground coffee to coffee press, using 4 tablespoons (22 grams) for every cup (6 fluid ounces) of water.
  1. Add water: Pour water over the grounds with cool or room-temperature water, filling the press.
  1. Stir: Saturate the grounds by gently stirring a few times with a spoon.
  1. Brew: Secure the lid and leave your coffee for 12-24 hours and enjoy waking up to a perfectly concentrated cold brew. (Don’t push the plunger down while your coffee steeps.)
  1. Plunge: Slowly push down the plunger to separate the coffee from the grounds.
  1. Pour: Carefully pour the cold brew concentrate into a pitcher. For an extra smooth taste, you can pour it through a second paper filter.
  1. Serve: Pour one part concentrate with one part water into a glass with fresh ice and enjoy your coffee at home!

Barista Tips

  • You can adjust the flavor of your cold brew by adding more or less water or a touch of cream, coconutmilk or seltzer.
  • Don’t have a coffee press? You can use any container for cold brewing. To separate the coffee grounds, carefully pour the coffee through a fine sieve or coffee filter.
