Day 7: Investing in Our Global Communities
This Global Coffee Week, we’re proud to work alongside our partners and our global licensees to deepen our collective impact.
Since the beginning, Starbucks has been about more than coffee. We are a people company first, driven by our belief in the limitless power of human connection. We’re excited about how this impact is showing up around the world – through initiatives led by The Starbucks Foundation and our investments in international markets.
By 2030, we plan on building a $30 million Global Community Impact Grants portfolio. We’ve invited our global licensee partners to nominate local nonprofit organizations who work in areas like youth workforce development, hunger relief and other social services. Since the program launched in March 2022, The Starbucks Foundation and licensee partners have awarded more than $7 million in grants to more than 120 nonprofit organizations across more than 50 markets.
We have other goals: to empower and uplift 1 million women and girls in coffee-, tea- and cocoa-growing communities around the world. And to that end, we’ve launched a coffee grown by a women-run coffee cooperative to celebrate our 20th anniversary in Peru, given a grant to a farmer in Costa Rica so she can supplement her family’s diet with chickens and eggs, and worked with longtime nonprofit partner Mercy Corps to help a family in Rwanda buy a cow.
Our China Coffee Innovation Park, which opened last week, demonstrates what we can truly be as a global company – embracing sustainability and supporting the vertical integration of coffee from bean-to-cup at scale, in a single market.
Our partners know their communities best. They’ve helped us develop drinks unique for local markets, and create meaningful store experiences like an all-women’s store in India, three Signing Stores in Malaysia for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing, and six Community Stores in Korea.
This Global Coffee Week, we’re proud to work alongside our partners and our global licensees to deepen our collective impact and invest in meaningful ways that will help people and communities thrive.
