The table in front of Krystal and Kingston Arthur was covered in books. Kingston was working on his sermon for Sunday about Cain and Abel; Krystal was studying. They’re actually both working toward their master’s degrees in seminary – he is nearly finished with his degree in Christian philosophy and apologetics, she is studying spiritual formation. They have regular study dates together at their local Starbucks. The two met at St. Louis Christian College, when Krystal first noticed Kingston – or rather, his deep, commanding voice – as he offered a prayer. Though they’d never met, she added him as a friend on Facebook. Kingston noticed that Krystal was “pretty good looking” and hoped the friend request meant she liked him. They finally connected in person at a friend’s wedding, after which he asked her on a date to a masquerade ball. Six years later, they’re married with two young sons and a third child on the way (a daughter born shortly after we met them). Near the end of a conversation about family, faith, community and imperfect allies, they said their babysitter had to go and packed up their books and bibles. “I’ll pray for you,” said Kingston as he turned to leave. Then he stopped. “Actually, I’m trying to stop telling people I’ll pray for them and actually take the time to pray with them. Can I pray with you?”
