Fact Sheet: Starbucks Donates $21M to Support Youth Education from Sales of Teavana Oprah Chai
As part of a first-of-its-kind partnership with Oprah Winfrey, Starbucks donated $21 million to help support youth education from sales of limited-time offering Teavana Oprah Chai. As a result of the three-year program, the donation made a positive impact on the lives of young people around the world.

- Oprah worked with Teavana’s leading tealogists to personally develop a distinctive blend – Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea – featuring a bold infusion of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves, blended with loose-leaf black tea and rooibos. The tea was sold at participating Starbucks® and Teavana® stores in the U.S. and Canada, as a handcrafted latte or a loose leaf tea to brew at home. For every Teavana® Oprah Chai beverage sold, $0.25 was donated; for every two ounces of loose leaf tea sold, $1 was donated, and for every gift set purchased (including the Oprah-designed Steep Good Thoughts tea for one set), $4 was donated to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation to benefit educational opportunities for youth through programs with Girls Inc., Pathways to College, National CARES Mentoring Movement and the U.S. Dream Academy.

Starbucks is also expanding its efforts to hire Opportunity Youth – 16- to 24-year-olds who are neither employed or in school – an estimated 5.4 million young Americans. In 2015, the company committed to hiring 10,000 Opportunity Youth by 2018 and has already met that goal.Since then, Starbucks has joined nearly 50 leading U.S. companies to form the 100,000 Opportunities Initiative. The country’s largest employer-led coalition announced it passed its target of hiring 100,000 opportunity youth last summer – two years ahead of schedule. The coalition, formed in July 2015, is now aligning with the cross-sector goal of creating one million opportunities by 2021.
