John Hughes is the senior vice president for government affairs and public policy at Starbucks. In this role, John leads Starbucks’ global engagement of government officials and oversees the company’s strategy and advocacy related government affairs and public policy development.
Prior to joining Starbucks, John was USAA’s Senior Vice President for Government and Industry Relations, overseeing USAA’s federal, state, and local political and advocacy efforts.
Prior to joining USAA, John was a managing director at The Glover Park Group, leading its government affairs division’s financial services practice.
Before GPG, John was a senior policy advisor to Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) during his tenure as House Majority Leader and House Democratic Whip, handling financial services, housing finance, consumer protection and trade issues. John also served as counsel to the House Financial Services Committee under then-Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA).
John earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree and Master of Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, John resides in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife (Tamara) and three daughters (Gabrielle, Brooke and Alexandra).
John serves on the board of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, the preeminent national organization supporting America’s military and veteran caregivers. He is also a volunteer CYO youth basketball coach.
John’s go-to drink is a Caffe Americano, and he enjoys a Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew on summer days. John is a passionate New York Yankees fan, and he plays in a 30+ baseball league.
